The thyroid is a gland located at the front of the neck and this gland produces thyroid hormone which has a major role in regulating many aspects of health including, metabolism, body weight, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, mental alertness and muscles and nerves. Surgery of the thyroid may be required if the thyroid is too active (hyperthyroid), enlarged (hypertrophied) or nodular producing a goitre, cancerous or suspected to be cancerous.

A general anaesthetic is required for thyroid surgery.

Calcium supplements and hormone replacement therapy may be required after thyroid surgery and all of this can be discussed with the doctor at the time of consultation.
