Colorectal surgery deals with disorders of the rectum, anus and colon. This surgery may be required to treat a number of conditions including cancer of the colon, inflammatory bowel disease, a fistula, repeated episodes of diverticulitis, pre-cancerous polyps.
With each different individual and each particular diagnosis there are many variants of colonic surgery.
The majority of operations required to be done on the bowel are performed as a keyhole procedure by the doctor but this is obviously dependent upon the nature and extent of the condition which is being treated in the first instance.
Some forms of bowel surgery do require a colostomy, be it temporary or permanent. This can all be discussed with the doctor at the time of consultation.
